Sure, Tim Burton might be the father of gothic romances, but have you watched these top five masterpieces I’ve mentioned down below?
Apart from Corpse Bride, Sleepy Hollow, and Edward Scissorhands, there are a whole lot of gothic romance movies you shouldn’t miss out on. I’ve mentioned my top five all-time favorites, and a little bit of a review on each. (So you can get the gist, wink wink)
Wuthering Heights - 1992 (Maybe the best gothic romance movie of all time?)
If you’d like to watch Lord Voldemort in his prime (Yes, with his nose still on his face!), this is the movie you should opt for.
Wuthering Heights is the adaptation of Emily Brontë’s novel. (Between you and me, she’s my fave Brontë sister)
This movie sets the mood for a rainy evening, and hey, Voldemort's simp era, ahem, I mean Heathcliff’s longing for Cathy will keep you hooked till the very end. (FYI, they are the main characters) Again, expect a depressing European countryside, a lot of wind, and overall darkness.
A plus point, If I may add, is that the music director is Ryuichi Sakamoto. No wonder why it keeps haunting you even after you’ve watched it more than a year ago!
To sum it up, here’s a line from Heathcliff (If you’re not convinced to watch it after reading this line, Idk how else to convince ya)
“Catherine Earnshaw, may you not rest as long as I am living. You said I killed you--haunt me then. The murdered do haunt their murderers. I believe--I know that ghosts have wandered the earth. Bram Stoker's Dracula - 1992 (The best of Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder maybe?)
The only reason why I didn’t put Bram Stoker’s Dracula before Wuthering Heights is because of Heathcliff’s love. (More toxic than Count Dracula’s love tbh)
On the other hand, our old boy, Count Drac is a better lover, since he has waited for centuries for his one true love. Expect to be bound up on middle-age castles, Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder!
Not much to say about this movie, except to say that it totally deserves a spot on my top five gothic romance movie list.
Bulbbul - 2020 (More trauma than romance?)
Get ready for a gothic horror masterpiece from India. 17th-century Bengal architecture, Bulbbul’s witty lines, and the haunting - also traumatizing- plot will keep you engaged till the very end.
The horrors of child marriage, extreme patriarchy, and a somber love story between Bulbbul and Satya are why you should add this to your gothic romance movie list.
Again, a must-watch, especially if you’re into Indian gothics.
Crimson Peak - 2015 (Gothic horror + Gothic romance)
If you’ve watched Pans Labyrinth and loved it, Crimson Peak is another gem from the same director.
Be ready for a shocking plot twist for this one. A great movie, though it might be a bit scary at first. Expect to see ghosts appear out of nowhere, but really, the ghosts are more traumatized than sinister.
What kept me hooked up till the end was the mystery, the great plot line and the edgy color pallet.
Interview with the Vampire - 1994 (Ready for a laugh?)
What can I say? It’s an interview with a modern-day (90’s to be precise) vamp boy, where he explains his sob story of becoming a vamp and discovering other vamp communities.
Why you should watch it? Well for the obvious gothic features, excellent character development, and the occasional horror comedy scenes.
A great watch if you’re in a not-so-serious mood.
